“Starting July 2025, the base electricity tariff in Peninsular Malaysia will be raised by 14.2% to 45.62 sen per kilowatt-hour (sen/kWh) under Regulatory Period (RP4),” according to a statement from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). As energy costs continue to rise, many homeowners are exploring alternative solutions to reduce their electricity bills while making a positive environmental impact. There are several ways to improve energy efficiency and lower electricity consumption at home.
1. Switch to Energy-Efficient Appliances
Older electrical appliances tend to consume more energy compared to newer, energy-efficient models. Check the lifespan of your household appliances and consider replacing them with those that have high energy star ratings. Upgrading essential appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines can lead to significant energy savings.
Additionally, replacing incandescent bulbs with LED lights can reduce electricity usage by up to 80%. LEDs last longer, consume less energy, and provide better illumination, making them a cost-effective lighting solution for homes.
2. Adopt Energy Saving Habits
Small behavioral changes can make a big difference. Turn off lights when leaving a room, reduce screen brightness on devices, and avoid overloading washing machines and refrigerators.
One of the biggest electricity-consuming appliances in Malaysian households is air conditioning, especially given the country’s hot climate. To reduce the cost, you can always set your air conditioner to a moderate temperature (around 24°C to 26°C) with the fans to circulate air. Lastly, remember to service your HVAC system once a year to ensure the efficiency.
3. Utilise Solar Energy
One of the significant actions that you could consider is installing a solar system for your house, it can potentially save up to 90% on electricity bills every month. The Malaysian government has been actively promoting renewable energy adoption through initiatives like the Net Energy Metering (NEM) Rakyat scheme, which has been in place since 2016. According to SEDA Malaysia, under the latest NEM Rakyat 3.0 Programme, “domestic consumer(s) who install a solar PV installation on the roof-top of their premises will consume the energy produced first, and any excess will be exported to the TNB grid. The credit to be received for such excess energy will be used to offset part of the electricity bill on a “one-on-one” offset basis for a period of ten (10) years of operation.” This programme is going to end in June 2025, take your action now to enjoy the advantages given by the government.
Solar energy not only helps homeowners generate their own electricity but also reduces carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Additionally, solar panels are designed for durability, with a lifespan of 25-30 years, requiring minimal maintenance.
